Meet Poppy-Dog Child of the Quarter!
Birthday:
October 1st, 2008. Favorite games or toys: Poppy's particularly fond of her "Clam Shell" which is full of treats. She tosses it and bounces it around the room and treats fly out for her to nibble on. She also likes chasing and tossing her soccer ball around and playing tug-o-war with just about any toy or stick! Favorite pastime: Poppy enjoys every moment of her day! From her walks in the woods, trips to the dog park, naps on the bench next to her owner during meal times, to finally curling up at night. She's happiest in the company of close family members and friends, especially her best dog friends Sammy and Goji! Fun Fact: At 26 pounds, she's bigger than any and every dog she comes into contact with! A feisty Boston Terrier - Chihuahua mix, she's personable, energetic and extremely smart! How Poppy become part of her family: Poppy is a rescue from WARL. I found her there as a tiny puppy in November of 2008, (when her name was "Candy Cane"). She and her 3 brothers ("Christopher," "Cranberry" and "Christmas" were brought up from Georgia just before Thanksgiving. I'd been looking for a pup for a long time and when I saw her, I just knew she was "the one." She had a heck of a personality then and she still does! A very big spirit for such a small dog. I brought her home on December 23rd, and she was the best Christmas gift ever! |
Poppy was selected as Dog Child of the quarter for her ability to get along with others and her loving personality. Since joining the Dog Child family she has been a joy to spend time with. We are happy to recognize Poppy by naming her Dog Child of the Quarter.

Meet Jack-May Dog Child of the Month!
Birthday: 3-23-99 (but he still refuses to accept that he is a “mature” dog). Breed: Brittany Spaniel Favorite games or toys: Rope toys that can be chased and swung in circles. Favorite pastime: He enjoys running in the fields or woods. Or if nothing else more interesting is happening, sleeping and, of course, eating anything unless it is an uncooked veggie. Fun Fact: Jake likes to play a game called “growl” which is essentially a tug of war between Jack and his owner. His owner must also be on all fours and growl back. Jack allows an occasional hug and kiss mid-play. How Jack became part of his family: Searched book of dogs for a mid-sized canine, ideally with short but silky hair. Found a breeder and picked Jack out from a large litter because of the “lucky spot” on his forehead. |
Jack (pictured above) was selected for Dog Child of the Month of May because of his ability to get along with others and his loving personality. Jack also participated in our Dog Child community clean up and animal rights awareness project in April along with students from the SEED Public Charter School of Washington DC.

Meet Elliott- March Dog Child of the Month!Birthdate:
May 2007 Breed: Yorkshire Terrier How human met canine: “I was looking online at Yorkierescueme.org, a Yorkie Rescue website that had been recommended to me, and I saw this pitiful little guy. Elliott was purchased from a puppy mill by a cruel and horrible woman who abused and then abandoned him. I drove up to Pa. to meet him. He was so shy and sweet, when I cuddled him he actually purred.... Of course, at that point, I knew he had to be mine. He was terrified of everything at first, now he is a very happy little dog who loves his dog walker!!” Favorite past time: Sleeping, cuddling and eating chicken. Elliot is also a big fan of crisp cold days and basking in the sun on the balcony. Favorite toy: Loves to play “slip away and race.” A huge game that can go on for a very long time if left up to Elliott. As soon as you get close to him, he runs the other direction—he’s quite sneaky about it and very fast. He loves this and gets a huge kick out of it! |
Elliott (pictured above) was our featured Dog Child for the month of March. Dog Child voted him top dog for his notable progress in overcoming his fears.
